AROUND THE WORLD 1: Crocodile Kills Professor

On Sunday, March 19, a professor at the University of Washington Medical School was killed in Botswana when a crocodile pulled him from a dugout canoe.

Richard K. Root, 68, was with his wife on a wildlife tour of the Limpopo River in Botswana in Africa when the incident took place. Root sat in the lead canoe with tour guides when a crocodile came out of the water and pulled Root into the river. Root was not seen again. While the guides had been on the lookout for dangerous hippos, no one had reported crocodile attacks in the area.

Root had traveled to Africa to train health care workers to care for AIDs patients because there was a major shortage in doctors. He was known across the United States as an expert in infectious diseases.
