PICTURE OF THE WEEK: Art Grants
Arts in education resources and programs, inclusive for students of all abilities, are used in classrooms nationwide. In fact, recent studies show that an arts-based curriculum opens doors to learning for all students.
On March 2, VSA arts, an international non-profit organization and an affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, dedicated to providing educational opportunities through the arts to children with disabilities, announced grants to art organizations across the country. These grants are made possible through a partnership with a MetLife Foundation called “Arts Connect All." The program encourages partnerships with local public schools by creating or enhancing multi-session, inclusive education programs.
VSA arts also develops arts in education programs to encourage inclusion in the classroom. Recent programs include:
* "Let Your Style Take Shape" introduces students--grades five through eight--to the connections between art, science, and math as a way to grasp math concepts. This program, developed with Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc., a division of The Weekly Reader, is sent to thousands of public schools across the country and is available also online at www.vsarts.org. “Let Your Style Take Shape” provides educators with suggestions for creating inclusive educational environments and cross-curricular lessons that meet national standards for math and the visual arts.
* The Writing Project is an educational program that encourages young writers, ages 11-14, who are living with a disability to explore their world from different points of view and see their work published in an online literary journal.
