SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2: Wild Coyote

New York City entertains many visitors from around the world. Last week, Central Park entertained an unusual visitor from the countryside--a coyote. The coyote must have traveled through miles of busy New York City streets before finding its way to Central Park.

After eluding park rangers for two days, the wild coyote was captured last Wednesday, so the ducks and songbirds are safe again in Central Park. Although he was seen several times, the coyote did not attract immediate widespread notice because he didn’t howl. Residents of New York City just missed an opportunity to hear the wild, high-pitched Song of the West because coyotes have two howling seasons, January/February and September/October. The quiet coyote was returned to the countryside after it recovered from the chase.

Coyotes live in many spots from Canada to Mexico. They thrive in desert, mountain, and (apparently) city climates. Coyotes were also seen in New York City in 1999 and 1995.
