SPORTS ZONE 1: Germans Hopeful About World Cup

Germany beat the United States 4-1 in a friendly pre-World Cup game on Wednesday. This game left the Germans feeling good about their team, as stated by the Associated Press, which hopefully will last until the World Cup which will take place in their home country in roughly three months time.

The first half of the game was scoreless and sloppy, but Germany came alive in the second half to pull off a win. Two substitute players scored the first two goals in the 46th and 73rd minutes of the game. Then the captain, Michael Ballack, and another player sealed the deal with their goals six minutes later. The only American goal was scored by Steve Cherundolo in the 86th minute.

This win came at the right time because the team was being criticized after their 4-1 loss to Italy. Many people, as the Associated Press reported, felt that Germany’s chances of being successful in the World Cup were diminished by their loss to Italy, but their hopes were restored by the second half of this game.

The World Cup starts June 9 and lasts until July 9. The final will be played in Berlin, Germany.
